The Conservation Breeding Centre for Grey Junglefowl was established with the support of Central Zoo Authority, Government of India in the year 2014 in an area of 2.90 Ac. The construction of Conservation Breeding Centre was started in the off-display area opposite to the fodder plot, as approved in the master layout plan.
Eight blocks of aviaries of size 13.8 m x 6.1 m, each block with three cubicles of size 4.6 m x 6.1m each were constructed with rodent proof flooring. The height of the aviaries is 2.5m and 2.2m on front and rear sides respectively. The aviaries were covered with brick wall (9 inch thick) on the rear side, and the other three sides with 16-gauge GI chain link mesh of size ½ x ½ inch.
The Conservation Breeding programme started on 21.03.2014 with 33 Grey Junglefowl which were identified and maintained in the Zoo as founder population, for which genetic purity was tested by LaCONES, Hyderabad. Another 8 Nos. new pens were constructed during the year 2017-18 of size 4.87m x 7.25m. The height of the aviaries is 3.8m and 3.5 m on front and rear sides. The Conservation breeding programme is under progress and the total population by the end of the financial year 2023-24 is around 52, with 30 males and 22 Females respectively.
